This is a costume, alright, but the only hint it may have of being period for the early 1890's is if you look at it for less than five seconds. In october 2007, I attended the larp Kristianiabohemen, which took place in the 1890's Oslo bohemian group by the same name. The larp lasted for two evenings and promised low costume expectations. I was in the middle of revising for my exams, and promised myself to choose the easiest way out of every possible costume desicion.
The only semi period piece of clothing is the old chemise that I had bought for about a dollar (10Sek) in a Swedish second hand shop a year earlier. I borrowed my friend's corset, put on a lolita shirt from h&m and wore my own velour jacket over it. I wore faux old fashion boots that in real life looks more 2007 than 1890's, and the only thing I sewed myself was a rather shabby skirt that I've been meaning to remodel ever since. The only thing I bought for the event was the fake hair that covered my dreads.
I'll admit that I felt a bit shabby at the actual larp, but I don't mind that now. To me this costume is the proof on how little work you can do and still get away with it.
